On Monday, after President-elect Donald Trump has signaled that the United States wants ownership of Greenland, Elon Musk posted that those in the country, if they want their independence, should want to be part of America.

"The people of Greenland should decide their future and I think they want to be part of America!" Musk posted on X.

Musk made the post in response to Richard Hanania, who said, "What’s stopping Trump or say Elon Musk from creating economic relationships and nudging the entire population towards demanding annexation by the US, like Texas did?"

Trump in late December said that the US "feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede said in a statement, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale."

Since Trump signaled that the US had a desire to own Greenland, the leader of the country has called for independence from Denmark, the country that does have authority over the island nation. Egede said in a speech marking the new year, “The Greenlandic people’s opportunity for independence has been adopted through the provisions of the Self-Government Act, thereby creating a legal basis for how independence can be achieved," per The Hill.

“A draft constitution for our country has also been prepared,” he said. “Work has already begun with regard to creating the framework for Greenland as an independent state within the possibilities and provisions of the Self-Government Act.”

Egede added that a new development for Greenland is “imminent” after Trump has talked about purchasing the land. After Trump repeated the idea of purchasing the nation, Donald Trump Jr. has also planned to take a personal trip to Greenland.

"As someone who has traveled to some fascinating places across the globe as an outdoorsman, I’m excited to stop into Greenland for a little bit of fun this week," Trump Jr. told Fox News. He is reportedly "popping in for a quick day-long trip to shoot some fun video content for podcasting" but will not meet with government officials.

The territory would be geographically strategic in a time of war and with it has many mineral resources.
