During the 2024 election campaign, Trump said he would have “no problem” releasing more Epstein-related documents.
“Time to drop the really big bomb,” Musk wrote on Thursday. “Donald Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.”
His claim drew swift backlash and was later removed without explanation. David Schoen, Epstein’s former lawyer, publicly disputed Musk’s suggestion.
“I was hired to lead Jeffrey Epstein’s defense as his criminal lawyer 9 days before he died,” Schoen posted on X. “He sought my advice for months before that. I can say authoritatively, unequivocally, and definitively that he had no information to hurt President Trump. I specifically asked him!”
Earlier this year, in February, the Department of Justice released over 100 pages of documents related to Epstein, including flight logs and phone records. None of the newly released files included information about Trump that had not already been made public. It was previously known that Trump flew on Epstein’s jet several times in the early 1990s, information that has been public since 2021.
In response to Musk’s series of posts, which also included calls for Trump’s impeachment as well as criticisms of the Trump-backed budget bill currently in Congress, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the remarks.
"This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted,” Leavitt said Thursday. “The president is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again.”
Trump responded Friday by suggesting Musk had “lost his mind.”
While Trump has acknowledged knowing Epstein, his team has consistently denied any involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes. Trump is also reported to have banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago in 2007 after an alleged incident involving a teenage daughter of a club member.
During the 2024 election campaign, Trump said he would have “no problem” releasing more Epstein-related documents.
“I don’t think — I mean, I’m not involved,” Trump said in September, a report by the New York Post noted. “I never went to his island, fortunately, but a lot of people did.”
