"We need to stop people from coming into our country with no destiny."
Tucker Carlson interviewed New York Mayor Eric Adams in a video released on Tuesday, in which Adams admitted that he felt as though he was facing investigation from the Joe Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) because he had opposed the administration’s open border policies.
During the almost 50-minute interview, Adams said on multiple occasions that he felt that his complaints about the Biden border crisis—which would lead to over 7,000 migrants a week seeking shelter in the country’s largest city—made him a target. The mayor also said that he was told he was not behaving like a “good Democrat” by voicing his complaints.
Adams, who faces charges related to accusations that he took bribes from the Turkish government in the form of campaign contributions, flights and hotel rooms, told Carlson that the total bill for the housing, feeding, and general care for the illegal immigrants was at least $6.8 billion.
“I spoke with the President [Biden] himself… The president came here, the governor and I sat down with the president. We said, ‘Mister President, we don’t know what they’re telling you about this problem. This is a terrible problem that’s playing out on the ground. We need to fix our border. We need to stop people from coming into our country with no destiny,” Adams said.
“There were some that were coming here with almost six months to a year, sometimes two years without any work authorization. What are you doing with someone that cannot provide for themselves for that long period of time? We had to house them. Feed, clothe, house, educate 40,000 children, hold them into a shelter system, the complete package of what you would do for an adult that can’t take care of themselves.”
Adams said that when he complained about this, he was told to “be a good Democrat.”
Carlson questioned why this would be the burden of the New York taxpayer. “Someone comes into our country illegally from another nation, not invited, here in violation of our laws, and it’s your responsibility to make sure they’re dealt with? How does that work? Where does that responsibility come from?”
Adams said he did not know and said that it should be on the national taxpayer’s dime, not just New York.
“It should be a national price tag. They want to give us $138 million for a $6.5 billion price tag. They wanted to reimburse us for a hotel room at $11 per hotel room. You can’t get a doorknob in New York City for $11. It was just unrealistic… To bring people into the country without knowing where they are going to and what is their role, that is not a plan, that is chaos, and that chaos started to really cascade throughout our entire country,” Adams said.
Adams said that the illegal immigrant crisis came at a time that New York was rebounding and that the problem has gotten so bad that the city is now dealing with “Venezuelan gang leaders.”
“My hands were tied, I couldn’t stop the busses from coming in, I could get them work authorization to work, I was required to give them housing, I couldn’t allow them to volunteer and give them a stipend for picking up garbage and removing graffiti. They said we can’t do that either.”
