“Kamala Harris was trying to get to the left of Bernie Sanders."
CNN commentator Erin Burnett was visibly taken aback that then-Sen Kamala Harris was in favor of taxpayer-funded sex changes for detained illegal immigrants in 2019. Her unearthed far-left policy proposal was reported on by the broadcast outlet on Monday. The segment also covered that she was in favor of ending ICE detainers.
A clip of reporter Andrew Kaczynski went viral on Monday and Tuesday when he brought up to Burnett on CNN that Harris previously took the radical position of funding sex changes for illegal immigrants if they had been detained after crossing the border.
Kaczynski presented policy positions that Harris had taken in a questionnaire that was for the ACLU. “Kamala Harris was trying to get to the left of Bernie Sanders. She was trying to get to the left of Elizabeth Warren. And you really see that in a lot of these answers,” Kaczynski said of Harris.
He added, “And I want to walk our viewers through a little bit of what she said. Let’s just take immigration and look at what she said here. She said on immigration, she made this open-ended pledge to end immigrant detention. She said she supported taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for detained migrants. She also said-"
Burnett cut off Kaczynski, visibly taken aback, and asked, "Taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for detained migrants? She actually said she supported that?"
Kaczynski replied, “She wrote- both wrote and answered in the affirmative when she was asked this, and she said she also supported it for federal prisoners."
The policy position came up as they were discussing how Harris was once in favor of cutting funding for ICE as she was running for president in the 2020 election cycle. In 2019, Harris was rated by GovTrack as the most liberal Senator in Congress.
Other progressive policies on the border that she committed to the ACLU in 2019 included the ending of ICE detainers as well as pledging to "end" immigrant detention.
Kaczynski went on to say that Harris also supported the legalization of all drugs at the federal level, including fentanyl as well as crack cocaine, per Mediaite.
When the Harris camp was reached out to for comment about her past positions, a campaign representative said, "The Vice President’s positions have been shaped by three years of effective governance as part of the Biden-Harris administration," per Fox News.
