The Sounders told fans not to bring Palestinian or Israeli flags to the soccer game.
During Seattle’s 2-0 victory over Dallas on Monday night, members allegedly of independent fan club Emerald City Supporters (ECS) flew a Palestinian flag, a banner that said “Free Gaza” and an flag with an Antifa logo in Palestinian colors.
One fan told The Post Millennial, “The cheerleader’s speech went something like this: ‘Now is the time for solidarity! If you want to stand for solidarity, this is the time! If you don’t want to stand for solidarity, that’s OK, too. Don’t hate people that don’t if you do stand for solidarity; don’t hate people that don’t if you don’t stand for solitary. This is a space for everyone!’”
“Then he pulled out the Palestinian flag and started waving it around.”
In advance of the game, The Sounders released a statement instructing fans not to bring Palestinian or Israeli flags to the game. “It is with public safety in mind that we are not allowing the flags of either Israel or Palestine inside Lumen Field for Monday night’s MLS Cup Playoffs match against FC Dallas.”
“The ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza is a devastating humanitarian crisis and one that has far-reaching implications across our country and here in our community. Because of this, our club feels strongly that this temporary measure is required to ensure public safety and to make all fans feel secure and welcomed.”
“We understand that for some this decision will be disappointing. Ultimately, we have an obligation to our community to keep everyone that attends Sounders FC matches safe. We are also acting in accordance with Major League Soccer’s updated directives on this matter by fostering an inclusive environment, free from divisive discourse and messages that may be incendiary or spark unrest. That is the driving force behind this temporary update to our matchday policy.”
However, fans told The Post Millennial that no Sounders staff or security attempted to stop the on-field display or have the fans remove the posters or banners and added that the “… cheerleader had the Palestinian flag draped around his neck for the entirety of the game after he held it up and waved it around after his speech.”
The Sounders had previously attempted to ban Antifa symbols, including the Iron Front flag, from games but eventually caved to the activist groups.
The symbol once represented the fight against actual Nazis but has recently been co-opted by Antifa, whose members have been at local rallies supporting Hamas terrorists committing the worst attack on Jews since The Holocaust, claiming the rape, torture, and murder of over 1,500 Israeli civilians on Oct. 7 was a “justified” “resistance.”
