The husband of a high-ranking New York police official has been arrested after his son allegedly carried out a failed gang hit in the Bronx. The official has been removed from her role after she was accused of acting as her son’s getaway driver for the shooting.

James Lackard has been charged with attempted murder and conspiracy in connection with the June 29 Bronx shooting, per the New York Daily News. Both his wife, Jennifer Lackard, a former senior official with the Mount Vernon Police Department, as well as her son, Chase Lackard, were arrested on Tuesday. The mother and son have been hit with charges that include attempted murder, attempted assault, criminal possession of a firearm, conspiracy and reckless endangerment. Jennifer Lackard has been fired from her role with the police.

On June 29, Chase Lackard allegedly opened fire on a rival gang behind the Bronx Hall of Justice, where he had appeared the same day for an unrelated prior gun arrest. No one was injured in the shooting. Chase Lackard fled the scene in his family’s van, driven by Jennifer Lackard, prosecutors say. James Lackard was also inside the van. Chase Lackard allegedly opened fire from inside the van, with both parents present.

Text messages unveiled by prosecutors have revealed how Chase Lackard, a member of the Slutty Gang, had coordinated with his parents. All three had driven together in the van to the courthouse and fled together.

In a message Chase Lackard allegedly sent to his mother, he wrote, “Be directly in Fromt (sic) When I Leave.”

The mother allegedly replied, “You can’t just sit directly outside. It has to be timed right.”

James Lackard had been in North Carolina when his wife and son were taken into custody at their Soundview apartment on Tuesday. When he returned to the city, he surrendered to police. James Lackard’s bail has been set at $15,000, Jennifer Lackard’s bail has been set at $75,000, while Chase Lackard was ordered to be held without bail.
