"A signed memorandum of understanding and reimbursable agreement between the Department of Health and Human Services and USMS regarding the detail have concluded."
Fauci was a common voice of government during the COVID-19 pandemic, telling Americans not to gather, to wear masks, and to keep kids out of school. Trump promised to cut excessive costs in the "bloated" federal government while on the campaign trail, implementing the new DOGE program once he won the election. Fauci's security was likely on the list of cuts.
When asked by The Daily Mail about the ending of the security detail for the former top doc, they were told "The USMS does not disclose information regarding threats that involve protected persons" and "indicated that Fauci had begun footing the bill for his own protection."
The US Marshals dropped the $15 million deal after Fauci went on a book tour over the summer, where he said, "Deep down, that there's a possibility that somebody's gonna kill me." Fauci has been surrounded by security on a near-constant basis over the last few years, with security waiting outside his home at all hours. The doctor, worth around $11 million, has cost the taxpayer $15 million in total with his government-funded security detail.
The government-funded security deal was noted in a memorandum of understanding between the US Marshals and the Department of Health and Human Services.
"A signed memorandum of understanding and reimbursable agreement between the Department of Health and Human Services and USMS regarding the detail have concluded," they told the outlet.
On Saturday, Fauci was spotted walking with his wife without any security detail. Over the summer months, around six bodyguard vehicles were seen parked in his neighborhood that contains his property, worth $2.2 million.
Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) told the outlet, "I think we need to look at all security details," when he spoke of the incoming efforts by DOGE. He added that it made "no sense" for Fauci to have that level of security.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who has been a fierce critic of Fauci, indicated to reporters earlier this year that the amount of security the retired doctor was receiving over the last two years was a waste of government funds.
"I've had 34 death threats in a week before. I have had death threats as soon as this last week," Paul said at the time. "So we get them all the time, and nobody picks me up in a limo and takes me to where I want to go every day."
"The only other person probably getting his level of security would be the president, vice president, maybe cabinet members, and a few members in leadership in the House and Senate," Paul added.
