FBI task force spoke to Luigi Mangione's mom day before his arrest for UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting—she said she 'could see' her son committing murder

"They had a conversation where she didn't indicate that it was her son in the photograph, but she said it might be something that she could see him doing," Kenny said in a news conference.

The mother of Luigi Mangione, the man charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was questioned by police just over a day before her son was arrested in Pennsylvania, and reportedly told investigators that the killing could be something "she could see" Mangione doing.

According to Fox News, investigators in California recognized Mangione from photos released by the New York Police Department and called Mangione’s mother to ask if the suspect being sought by officers could be her son, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Mangione's mother had reported her son missing to San Francisco police in November.

One photo of the suspect caught the attention of a San Francisco police officer who was working the missing person case, who then called the FBI and provided the bureau with Mangione’s name. This prompted New York officers who were working alongside the FBI’s task force to call his mother, Kathleen, the Daily Mail reported.

"They had a conversation where she didn't indicate that it was her son in the photograph, but she said it might be something that she could see him doing," Kenny said in a news conference.

Kenny said that the phone conversation between investigators and Mangione’s mother occurred "very late" on December 7, while Mangione was taken into custody on December 9 at an Altoona, Pennsylvania McDonald’s.

Mangione was indicted by a grand jury on Tuesday and was charged with a first-degree murder count, two counts of second-degree murder, and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Authorities are working to extradite Mangione, who is currently being held in Pennsylvania, to New York. Sources told Fox News that Mangione does not plan to fight the extradition at his upcoming Thursday hearing.

Mangione is accused of fatally shooting the healthcare executive from behind, outside a Manhattan hotel in the morning of December 4.
