Tom Homan, selected by President-elect Donald Trump as the new border czar, said Tuesday that if New York City doesn’t want to help him deport illegal immigrants, he’ll “do the job” with them or without them. Mayor Eric Adams has said that under a Trump administration, New York will continue to be a sanctuary city, meaning that they will not comply with federal authorities seeking to remove illegal immigrants.

In an interview on Fox News’ Fox & Friends, the former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director responded to suggestions that New York City might not cooperate with the new Trump administration’s objective of deporting illegals because it is a sanctuary city. “If you’re not going to help us, get the hell out of our way,” Tom Homan warned, saying he won’t let sanctuary cities and unwilling politicians get in the way of federal immigration laws that need to be enforced.

“If we can’t get assistance from New York City, we may have to double the number of agents we send. We’re going to do the job with you or without you,” he said, adding that doing nothing is no longer an option. “It’s much easier to arrest the bad guy in the jail. Give us access to Rikers Island that we’ve been kicked out of. Let us get the bad guy in jail. It’s safer for the alien, it’s safer for the officer, it’s safer for the community,” he said.

Homan said that city prosecutors are endangering the lives of citizens when they allow offenders to walk free without bail restrictions. “If you’re releasing bad guys out in the community, we’ve got to go find them. Which puts the officer and the community at risk,” he said. “The bottom line is, sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals.”

In a statement, Mayor Eric Adams (D-NYC), who just ended a free debit card giveaway for illegals, said Democrats and Republicans should forge bipartisan immigration reform. “That is what’s best for the American people, as well as the immigrants who come here, seeking the opportunity to build a better life and have a shot at the American Dream.” Although Adams said he is willing to work with the new administration, he said New York would stay a sanctuary city, The New York Post reported. A City Hall spokesperson told The Post that America’s largest municipality would not be fully cooperating with ICE: “we will not be providing any information about the undocumented to the federal government.”

That proviso does not sit well with many cops. “Police officers don’t get the choice to pick and choose what crimes we enforce, just as we are not the judge and jury,” Vincent Vallelong, president of the NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association told The Post. “Misguided politicians need to step back and allow every facet of law enforcement to work hand and hand so that the criminals who enter our country illegally are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he told The Post.
