Former Biden administration Department of Energy official Sam Brinton, who identifies as non-binary, was arrested at his home in Maryland on Wednesday as a “fugitive from justice,” while charges of Grand Larceny are pending.

According to Fox News, Brinton's arrest is concerning an alleged third case of airport luggage theft that the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police were made aware of in February. Brinton is currently being held in jail without bond.

James Johnson, a spokesperson for the organization said, "Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police executed a search warrant May 17 in Montgomery County, Maryland,  in connection with allegations of stolen property in luggage from Reagan National Airport that was brought to the department’s attention in February 2023.”

He concluded, “With the assistance of Montgomery County Police, Samuel Otis Brinton, age 35, of Rockville, Maryland, was taken into custody Wednesday pending charges of Grand Larceny.”

A neighbor of Brinton's told The Daily Wire that “four unmarked police showed up last night, they would not let his spouse Kevin leave. After about an hour Sam Brinton was escorted out in handcuffs.”

In February, Fashion designer Asya Khamsin claimed her luggage was lost at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in 2018. She noted that the outfits Brinton wore in photographs matched custom-made pieces that were in the bag at the time.

Brinton was first charged in October for allegedly stealing a Vera Bradley suitcase from a luggage carousel at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport in September. He was also charged with misdemeanor theft after being caught on video stealing luggage at Harry Reid International. A charge he pleaded “no contest” to and was able to avoid jail time.

Brinton was fired from his position as deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition at the Department of Energy after videos of the allegations came to light.
