Former 'top cop' Kamala Harris boosted bail fund that freed murderers, criminals

Just four years ago, Harris promoted a fund that bailed out those wreaking havoc on cities in the wake of George Floyd's death.

In the days since Joe Biden announced that he wouldn't be running for re-election, Kamala Harris has been busy on the campaign trail trying to convince voters that she should be the next president. She has repeatedly touted her experience in law enforcement, first as a prosecutor, then as district attorney of San Francisco and as attorney general of California, claiming it's made her well-suited to take on Donald Trump.

What Harris failed to remind voters of was that while running in 2020, she publicly promoted a fund that bailed out a number of alleged criminals, including one man who went on to be charged with murder after being released. As it has become more likely that Harris will be the Democratic nominee, a number of critics have dug up that part of her past and used it to counter her new narrative.

"I took on perpetrators of all kinds," she told the audience at a campaign event. "Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump's type ... and in this campaign I will proudly put my record against his."

Just four years ago, however, she was openly calling on people to donate to the Minnesota Freedom Fund to help bail out those wreaking havoc on cities across the state in the wake of George Floyd's death.

At the time, one user pointed out that as San Francisco district attorney, Harris' "top priority" was "to make bail in the city more expensive."

As Fox News reports, the Minnesota Freedom Fund appears to still be taking donations, despite acknowledging its role in paying the $11,500 bail of George Howard in 2021, who then went on to commit murder just a month later. He admitted to the crime in 2023.

"MFF believes that every individual who has been arrested by the law enforcement is innocent until proven guilty," the group said, "and if a judge deems them eligible for bail, they should not have to wait in jail simply because they don’t have the same income or access to resources as others."
