Workers from big tech are among the largest group of donors to socialist Zohran Mamdani for his New York City mayoral campaign, with a share of workers coming from companies like Google and Meta.

Although some tech leaders have worries over the ascent of Mamdani in the mayoral race, their employees have thrown their support behind the socialist, who has promised to increase taxes on corporations, create government-funded grocery stores, and freeze rents in New York City in an attempt of what Mamdani claims will bring "affordability" to the Big Apple.

Google employees have donated nearly $40,500 to Mamdani's campaign as of July 11, which is more than any other company or organization, according to the New York Post. $10,500 has come from Meta employees, which ranks seventh on the list of organizations whose employees have donated to the socialist.

Amazon employees, coming right behind Meta, have donated nearly $9,000 to Mamdani's campaign. In addition to these, employees from Bloomberg, Spotify, Block, and Squarespace have donated totals between $3,800 and $9,000. Aside from employees in tech, the organization with the second most donations to Mamdani was the Columbia University system, with nearly $33,000 in donations to Mamdani.

Columbia was followed by employees at the NYC Department of Education at $26,214, the New York University system at $24,331, and the CUNY university system at $18,336. In New York City, campaign finance law requires that when you donate more than $100 to a political campaign, you must also disclose your employer. The numbers do not include those who are self-employed or retired.

Mamdani in total has raised over $816,000 from around 10,500 donors between June 25 and July 11, but over $350,000 of that has been coming from outside of New York, the Post reported. Critics of Mamdani's plans have indicated that businesses will flee the Big Apple if Mamdani is elected as mayor.
