Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives have penned and signed a letter to US Attorney General William Barr demanding that he investigate allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, Daily Wire reports.
The letter, signed by 39 lawmakers on Saturday, points to "widespread reports of irregularities" such as a "glitch" which caused a county in northern Michigan to flip 6,000 votes to Democrats and reports of USPS workers being told to "backdate" ballots. While the glitch in Michigan has since been fixed, reports of mass voter fraud have not yet been substantiated.
"While each state runs its own election process, the United States Department of Justice is ultimately responsible for the integrity of federal elections. The American people must have the utmost confidence that the outcome of the presidential election is legitimate," the letter tells AG Barr.
The congressmen called for the ballot counting process to be more transparent "so that the American people will have full confidence in the result." According to a poll from NBC News conducted immediately prior to the election, only about half of all Americans are confident that the election process will function in a "fair and equal" manner. The poll is an improvement from the summer however, since as early as August only 40 percent had confidence in the election's outcome.
The letter further stated "if a state court orders that observers can watch ballot counting in a federal election, no local election official should be able to defy that order." In Philadelphia, a local election official defied a court order and refused to allow Republicans to observe the ballot counting process.
"With that in mind, we request an immediate response to the following questions. What are you doing to ensure the integrity of the voting and counting process right now? Will you commit to using all the resources at your disposal to ensure that only legal votes are being counted and being counted in a fully transparent and manner immediately?"
