GOP Rep Mark Green to resign, shrinks House majority to 7

GOP Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) announced that he will resign from Congress, further shrinking the slim majority that the Republicans have in the House even further.

Green wrote in a post to X, "It's with a heavy heart that I say farewell. To my constituents across Tennessee’s 7th District—thank you. The trust you put in me is humbling. I will look back fondly on my years of serving as your voice in Washington."

Green did not disclose specifics but announced that he would be starting a new business venture. "While I cannot give the details here, I will be doing something specifically designed to help America compete against the CCP [Chinese Communist Party], but this time in business,” Green said. 

Green was elected in 2018, and replaced Marsha Blackburn, who is now in the Senate. He also spoke about his work in Congress, including strengthening the border as well as taking care of veterans and military members. The move from the congressman was expected after he said in June that he would soon step down from his role, per CNBC.

Republicans in the House have had a number of lawmakers step out of their roles over the last few months, including Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) who was appointed to the Trump administration. Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) as well, will not seek reelection, possibly opening up the seat to a Democrat. 

The multiple moves have shrunk the number of GOP members in the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) already has a razor thin majority. With his resignation, the House will be split to 219 Republicans to 212 Democrats.
