On Thursday, House Republicans passed a bill banning biological males from competing in women’s and girls’ school sports.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023 passed in the Republican-controlled chamber 219 to 203 along party lines, according to Fox News. The bill is unlikely to pass in the Democrat-controlled Senate, with Biden also voicing his opposition to the bill.

During debate, House Republicans defended the bill, with Rep Virginia Foxx saying that Democrats are ignoring the "physical advantages" biological males have over females.

"We hate no one," Foxx said. "It is ridiculous that we have had to stand here today to defend the rights of women and girls to participate in sports against other women and girls and they not being taken advantage of by biological males."

"The House just passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act to ensure Title IX is protecting real women," Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on Twitter after the bill’s passing. "Unfortunately, every single Democrat voted against it because they believe in beating down women while propping up trans terrorists."

The bill, introduced in February by Rep. Greg Steube, seeks to change Title IX to require a student’s sex be "recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth" for the purposes of sports participation.

The bill states that it would prohibit "a recipient of Federal financial assistance who operates, sponsors, or facilitates athletic programs or activities to permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls."

"Nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit a recipient from permitting males to train or practice with an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls so long as no female is deprived of a roster spot on a team or sport, opportunity to participate in a practice or competition, scholarship, admission to an educational institution, or any other benefit that accompanies participating in the athletic program or activity," the bill adds.

Title IX, enacted in 1972, prohibits discrimination in educational programs or activities that receive federal funding on the bases of sex, and was created to ensure equal opportunities in sports for women.

"Democrats have regressed so far backwards they are willing to erase the rights that women have fought decades to obtain, all to elevate biological males to the top of women's podiums. The integrity of women's sports must be protected," said Steube on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Democrats have blasted the bill, with Rep. Pramila Jayapal saying during Wednesday’s debate on the bill, "This bill fuels a virulent hate campaign against kids who just want to play with their friends."

In a Monday statement, the White House said that the bill would deny biological males access to sports even at the elementary level.

The bill "targets people for who they are and therefore is discriminatory" and Biden would veto it if it reached his desk, the statement said.

The bill comes as a growing movement has formed of women speaking out against the biological males that have infiltrated their sports.

It also comes as the Biden administration has proposed changes to Title IX, including establishing policies that would prohibit blanket bans on biological males competing in women’s sports at all school levels.

The proposal would instead have schools take into consideration the age level, level of competition, and type of sport before enacting a ban.
