The Houston Independent School District announced Wednesday that it will implement a mask mandate for the 2021-2022 school year.

Superintendent Millard House II voiced his concerns about students wearing masks as the Delta variant is beginning to spread, according to local news.

With a vote slated to pass among the Trustees, masks will now be treated as part of the dress code for Houston schools. Any student that does not comply with this mandate will face disciplinary action.

The mandate goes against Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order, which was meant to prevent localities and schools from mandating masks. The governor has yet to respond to the ongoing story.

The first day of school for Houston ISD students is August 23. It remains to be seen whether Governor Abbott will take any retaliatory action by that date.
