"This was a bribe masquerading as an international business transaction. Nothing more, nothing less," Matt Gaetz said.
Hunter Biden was in Congress on Wednesday testifying before the House Oversight and Judiciary committees in a closed-door deposition that came over two months after he refused to attend his first deposition and faced potential contempt of Congress charges.
Speaking outside the chamber, Rep Matt Gaetz said that one of the most "interesting" moments in the deposition has been Hunter Biden telling the committees "that he joined the Burisma board to counter Russian aggression."
"I hadn’t heard that one before that thank goodness we had Hunter Biden on the Burisma board, because that was central to his strategy to stand up to Vladimir Putin."
Gaetz said at the time that Hunter Biden had not pleaded the fifth and had been answering committee members’ questions.
When asked if Hunter Biden had said what value he brought to Burisma, Gaetz responded, "We've asked those questions and there is there is an illusory value. It is a mirage to believe that Hunter Biden was engaged in international business. This was a bribe masquerading as an international business transaction. Nothing more, nothing less."
In Hunter Biden’s opening statement, he said the investigation into his father was based on "MAGA-motivated conspiracy theories."
"For more than a year, your committees have hunted me in your partisan political pursuit of my dad. You have trafficked in innuendo, distortion, and sensationalism, all the while ignoring the clear and convincing evidence staring you in the face. You do not have evidence to support the baseless and MAGA-motivated conspiracies about my father because there isn't any."
