Michael Hancock, the Democratic mayor of Denver, got on a flight to Houston on Wednesday to visit family, after telling his constituents to avoid travel.

Hancock had just previously publicly asked Denver residents to not engage in any travel and to spend the Thanksgiving weekend with only members of their own household.

According to the Denver local outlet  9News, the above tweet from his account went out just 30 minutes before he boarded the flight to Houston, with plans to drive to Mississippi and stay with family several states away this weekend.

Hancock's office has since released a statement: "As he has shared, the Mayor is not hosting his traditional large family dinner this year, but instead traveling alone to join his wife and daughter where the three of them will celebrate Thanksgiving at her residence instead of having them travel back to Denver. Upon return, he will follow all necessary health and safety guidance and quarantine."

Currently there have been 33,971 total cases of coronavirus in the Denver area, with 494 deaths.
