On Thursday morning, President Donald Trump called and spoke to Rachel Morin's mother to express his condolences. An illegal immigrant has been accused of rape and murder in the killing of Morin, who was a Maryland resident and mother of five.

“I am deeply touched by President Trump’s kindness and concern,” Patty Morin said in a statement, according to the Baltimore Sun. “He was genuine and truly wanted to know how our family was coping. He asked about Rachel and showed honest compassion for her untimely death. His words brought comfort to me during this very difficult time.”

Trump called Patty Morin on Thursday morning in order to express his condolences to the family. The illegal immigrant suspected in the death of Rachel Morin, Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, 23, landed in Martin State Airport in Middle River at around 11:30 am local time on Thursday. He will be booked into Harford County Detention Center and be served rape as well as murder charges.

In a press release, the Trump campaign stated, “President Donald Trump called Patty Morin, the mother of slain jogger Rachel Morin, in a heartfelt manner to offer his deepest condolences. Rachel Morin was tragically murdered in August 2023 while running on the Ma & Pa trail in Harford County.”

The case has become a flashpoint in the national conversation surrounding illegal immigration under the Biden administration.

When Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler announced the arrest on Saturday last week, he said “To 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and to every member of both chambers of Congress: We are 1,800 miles away from the southern border here in Harford County and the American citizens are not safe because of failed immigration policy.”

In contrast to Trump’s call, Patty Morin told Fox News that the Biden administration has not contacted anyone in her family. During an interview she slammed DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the Biden administration for a statement given to CNN.

Mayorkas told the outlet, “First and foremost of course our hearts break for the children, the loved ones and the friends of the individual who was murdered.” Patty Morin slammed his use of “individual” and that the DHS official did not use Rachel’s name in the segment.
