"I have the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it."
"Did he write a written note before, before the assassination attempt?" He was asked. "That's what the governor said yesterday. And what did that say?"
"What I'm able to say is... that the written note, we believe did exist, and we have evidence to show what was in that note, which is, and I'm going to summarize basically saying, the suspect wrote it out, saying 'I have the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I'm going to take it,'" Patel said.
"That note was written before the shooting. Evidence of its existence, we now have learned existed before the shooting, was in the location in the suspect and partner's home. But we have since learned that the note, even though it has been destroyed, we have found forensic evidence of the note, and we have confirmed what that note says, because of our aggressive interview posture at the FBI."
It was also revealed that after the shooting, Robinson joked to friends on Discord about being Kirk's killer. Robinson joked that his “doppelganger” was trying to “get [him] in trouble.”
Kirk was murdered at Utah Valley University while he was holding a campus event. He was speaking to students at the time, and this was the first stop on his fall college tour. The gunman fired from a nearby rooftop and a bullet struck Kirk in the neck. Video of the shooting quickly spread online and though he was rushed to a local hospital, doctors were unable to save his life.
22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson was arrested and charged with the shooting. He was identified after the FBI made video public to encourage anyone who knew him to identify him. The man's father recognized his face and urged him to surrender himself to police. Robinson threatened to kill himself rather than face justice, but his father, along with a family friend, called US Marshals and aided him in turning himself in.
Though many media outlets on the left speculated and even insisted that Robinson was on the right-wing of the political spectrum, it quickly became clear that though he came from a conservative family, Robinson was a leftist and was living with a partner who was transiting from male to female.
Writings left behind on the bullet casings revealed an interest in Antifa, trans ideology, and furries. Another bullet had the words, "Hey fascist! Catch!" Robinson hated Kirk over his conservative, traditional political views. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said, "It's very clear to us and to the investigators that this was a person who was deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology."
