Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said it was unclear whether the shooting victim had been the target of immigration-enforcement operations or what his nationality was.
Davis said in a news conference that the shooting occurred following a "small foot pursuit," NBC News reported.
Austin police were not involved in the shooting but are now investigating it in coordination with Homeland Security Investigations and state law enforcement, Davis said.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, a Democrat, lashed out at the Trump administration over the incident.
"A person being shot on the streets of Austin by someone purporting to be law enforcement, particularly when it’s ICE, is something that causes me to be unhappy and angry,” Watson said at the news conference. “While I’m unhappy and I’m angry about it, I’m not surprised at all.”
Texas Rep. Greg Casar, a Democrat, demanded that the agent responsible be held accountable and called for the release of the bodycam footage.
"Over and over, ICE has shot people and then lied about what happened. We can see the lies with our own eyes. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability," Casar said in an X post.
