Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN) has called for President Donald Trump to be impeached in a tweet on Wednesday.

"We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath," the congresswoman wrote.

The announcement comes as protesters opposing certification of the election results storm the US Capitol Building in Washington DC. Trump has called on the protesters to go home while maintaining that the election was rigged.

Republican leaders have called for calm in DC as violence and chaos overtook the area surrounding the Capitol. One person was reportedly shot inside the Capitol Building. Lawmakers who were attending certification proceeding have since fled the scene.

It is unclear what legal grounds Omar has for impeaching the President.

Congress pushed forward the Articles of Impeachment against Trump in January. He was later acquitted by the Senate.
