According to Fox News, none of the nine sectors at the southern border saw more than 200 crossings on Jan. 26, and the total number of daily encounters was only 582. The final days of the Biden-Harris administration saw between 1,200 to 1,400 a day. On Sunday, the Del Rio sector only recorded 60 crossings, the same sector that saw over 4,000 crossings per day at the height of President Joe Biden’s border crisis in December 2023.
2,523 border encounters were recorded in the first three days of the Trump administration. Jan 20 saw a daily total of 1,073, Jan 21 saw 736, and Jan 22 saw 714. Comparatively, in the last few days of the Biden-Harris administration, 3,908 encounters were logged. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sources told Fox News that there were 1,288 encounters nationwide on Jan. 17, then 1,266 on Jan. 18 and 1,354 on Jan. 19.
During his inauguration, Trump pledged to immediately "declare a national emergency at our southern border."
"All illegal entry will immediately be halted. And we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came…and I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country."
Since Jan. 20, the president has launched a massive operation against illegal immigration. Efforts have included sending US troops to the southern border and deputizing law enforcement agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the US Marshals Service to conduct immigration enforcement to supplement US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions.
