An illegal immigrant has been arrested after allegedly attempting to kidnap a 13-year-old girl from a school in West Valley City, Utah.

Miguel Angel Vega Sedano, 21, was subsequently charged with child kidnapping, as well as forging documents he allegedly used to fool people into believing he had entered the US legally and was allowed to stay.

According to KUTV, the vicim's parents contacted the Granite School District Police on Friday after discovering Instagram messages between their daughter and Sedano in which they discussed meeting up after she was done with classes.

"On Friday afternoon, the parents of a 13-year-old student notified school administrators and Granite Police just prior to the end of school, that an adult male had befriended their child online and made plans to meet in person. We are grateful the student disclosed the conversation to their parents and the student was not harmed," the school district said in a statement, per ABC4.

"This is an unfortunate, but very real, reminder of the dangers of social media. ... We highly discouraged, giving minors access to social media and respectfully request that if parents or guardians are unable to monitor their child's smartphone and social media use, they restrict access to it. If your student is inappropriately contacted by strangers on social media or the internet, contact law enforcement immediately."

Officers were able to track Sedano down and apprehended him while he was on his way to the school. The GSDP then turned him and the case over to the West Valley City Police Department.

During the ensuing interview with investigators, Sedano admitted that he had been communicating with the girl despite knowing she was underage. He also came clean about having been waiting to pick her up and take her away without her parents finding out.

A review of his Instagram chat history confirmed that he had, in fact, talked with the teen.

While authorities were arresting Sedano, it was discovered that he was carrying around a fake social security card and permanent resident card. He claimed that his uncle in Arizona had given them to him.

It has since been revealed that Sedano is a citizen of Peru. He is currently being held in custody at Salt Lake City County Jail as the investigation continues.
