On Saturday, Senator Chris Van Hollen claimed that a man identified as Ever Alvarenga, described as an asylum seeker, was driving to work when he was rear-ended by ICE and suffered significant injuries to his head, chest, back, and hands.
“After the accident, he was detained & ICE now refuses to allow his attorneys to meet with him privately, a clear denial of the due process rights afforded to all under our Constitution,” Van Hollen said. “ICE tactics are endangering our communities & violating the Constitution.”
However, reporting from Fox News’ Bill Melugin, citing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), presented a different account of the incident. According to DHS, Alvarenga is an illegal immigrant who entered the United States in 2014 and has had a final deportation order in place since 2018. The agency said he was targeted by ICE agents in Baltimore, at which point he allegedly fled in his vehicle at high speeds. At one point, he slammed on his brakes, causing a multi-car pileup. He then allegedly fled the scene on foot before being apprehended.
Two ICE agents were reportedly hospitalized as a result of the crash and are expected to recover.

Thankfully both our officers are expected to make a full recovery," said Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. "This dangerous attempt to resist arrest comes after sanctuary politicians have encouraged illegal aliens to evade arrest by hosting webinars instructing illegal aliens how to avoid being caught. Sanctuary politicians must stop encouraging this reckless behavior that endangers illegal aliens, our officers, and the public."
