An Illinois state trooper is in critical condition on Friday after being shot on the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago.
Police responded to the area of 43rd and the Dan Ryan at around 1:45 pm following reports of a shooting, according to WGN9.
A Chicago Fire Department spokesperson confirmed to CBS2 that the trooper was shot.
The trooper was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
"A woman who was passing by apparently used the trooper's own radio to report he'd been shot," according to CBS2.
Inbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway between 43rd Street and 74th street are currently closed as police investigate.
The shooting comes the same day that Illinois State Police were set to increase patrols on Chicago area expressways during the evening and overnight hours in response to a surge in shootings on the expressways over the past two years.
According to CBS2, State Police said that additional patrols will begin on Friday night. There would be a 157 percent increase in patrols, though police will not state an exact number of patrols due to security concerns.
So far this year, not counting Friday, State Police have reported 185 expressway shootings. Last year, there were 128, and in 2019, there were 52.
According to CBS2, the suspects behind the shootings are often not caught. Of the 185 shootings this year, just nine suspects have been arrested and charged.
