A 24-year-old Jessica Doty was fatally shot early Sunday, allegedly following an argument with supporters of Black Lives Matter.
The victim's family said the dispute was sparked by an argument involving Black Lives Matter and language, according to Fox 59. The two sides parted ways before witnesses claim that the perpetrator opened fire from a bridge nearby and ran away.
The victim's father Robert J. Doty, told Cassandra Fairbanks that his daughter told the Black Lives Matter supporters that "all lives matter." He confirmed the interview with Daily Wire, adding that he wanted justice for his daughter.
“It was squashed and they went up the hill and left we thought, but they were sitting on St. Claire waiting for us to come under the bridge and that’s when she got shot,” said Jose Ramirez, the victim's fiancé.
"She shouldn't have lost her life. She's got a 3-year-old son she loved dearly," he added.
Ramirez admitted that he did return fire, but did not manage to hit anyone.
Two people were shot in the same area one week earlier. A 14-year-old named Curtis White Junior was among those shot. He died in what the authorities have deemed an attempted armed robbery.
The IMPD has partnered with the Indiana State Police and two other departments to patrol the area.
Police have installed security cameras in the area as well, and intend to increase the number of patrols during the overnight hours.
“Our message is that the canal is still a safe to go,” Jerry Leary, IMPD Captain, said.
“Just recently the DMD is hiring two overtime officers to work the canal during those times nightly,” said Leary. “A combination of all those efforts we hope is going to make a difference..."
Her family only wants for her killer to be apprehended.
"We're going through a lot. The 3-year-old boy doesn't even understand really," said Ramirez. "I just want justice for Jessica and her son and her family."
