The psychologists counseled the Democrats on how to approach "authoritarian styles of speech."
During a mid-January retreat for the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee, Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) hosted psychologist Jim Coan and consultant Hal Movius, the latter of which specializes in "emotional regulation" as well as "negotiation," "influence," and "organizational development," according to Punchbowl News.
The shrinks counseled the Democrats on how to approach conflict and combat “authoritarian styles of speech." One attendee said that the Democrats were advised to not get into partisan fights on the committee.
When Raskin was asked about hiring the psychologists for the retreat, the lawmaker told the outlet, “They’re social psychologists, and they were just talking about communication and authoritarian styles of speech in the Trump age."
He claimed the psychologists "were talking about basically communication styles during the Trump era" as they moderated the session. Raskin will be working as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee with Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), and reportedly wants to approach his new role in a more measured way than how it was on the Oversight Committee where Raskin often clashed with Chairman James Comer (R-KY).
"This is only President Trump's first week in office, and he's already broken the House Democrats' brains again. They're already calling their shrinks," founder of the Article III Project Mike Davis said of the retreat with the psychologists.
