The suspect in Sunday’s shooting, who is dead, was Ndiaga Diagne, a Senegal-born US citizen.
"I don't know how it is that we got here, that what one person does somehow is then impugned on an entire community. The facts are the facts. The facts are that the immigrant community actually commits less crime in this country than anyone else," Crockett said.
She said that "every time there's some crazy situation like this, black folk sit around and say, ‘Oh, I hope they're not black, because we know that that's going to be an additional target on our backs.’ We know that the immigrant community was probably holding their breath and saying, ‘Oh, I hope it wasn't an immigrant, because then there's going to be another target on their back.’”
She added, "Listen, no one, in my opinion, is born in this country, and somehow, when they're born, because of where they were born, they somehow now are automatically a criminal. That's not like a real thing, but that's essentially what you do when you decide to impugn an entire community."
"If I was to give you the facts on who the shooters have been in these mass shootings, I can guarantee you the vast majority of them have been white, male, and homegrown, but we don't see them taking any action on that," she continued.
Crockett said the "first and foremost" thing is to "focus on the people that were hurt" and to "make sure that they’re able to recover, whether it is the physical wounds for the mental wounds." She called out Governor Greg Abbott, saying, "Maybe Greg Abbott should start talking about doing something better on healthcare access. We can maybe do that."
She continued, "Number two, we actually need to do something about guns. Don't sit there and say that it's the immigrants, maybe it's your lax laws when it comes to guns. Now, listen, don't take this as anti-gun y'all, because y'all all know that I'm a gun-toting Texan, but I went and I got my license. So just like y'all want to come up with all of these encumbrances for people to actually get to the ballot box, which the last time I checked a ballot is not going to kill you. But for whatever reason, it is easier to access a gun in the state of Texas than it is to access the ballot box. And you have to ask your question, why?"
Two people were killed and several others were injured in the shooting that took place at around 2 am on Sunday at Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden. The first of the victims was identified on Monday as Texas Tech student Ryder Harrington. The suspect, Diagne, was wearing a "Property of Allah" sweatshirt at the time of the shooting and had a “potential nexus to terrorism."
