JUST IN: Senate bill funding Ukraine war, Biden's 'border security', 'dead on arrival' in House: Mike Johnson

On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a letter to colleagues that a package in the Senate, which includes funding for Ukraine and addresses the border crisis, would be "dead on arrival" in the House.
 

"I wanted to provide a brief update regarding the supplemental and the border, since the Senate appears unable to reach any agreement. If rumors about the contents of the draft proposal are true, it would have been dead on arrival in the House anyway," Johnson said in a letter to colleagues, according to The Hill.

This comes as a major development as House Republicans have been fighting against further aid to Ukraine, urging Speaker Johnson to refrain from brokering a deal with the Democrats who introduced a package that would only address the historic border crisis as long as the US provides additional funding to Ukraine.

"Since the day I became speaker, I have assured our Senate colleagues the House would not accept any counterproposal if it would not actually solve the problems that have been created by this administration’s subversive policies," said Johnson in the letter.

The House Speaker's letter comes ahead of the House reconvening in the chamber on Monday.

Furthermore, Johnson addressed the House of Representatives next move, which is to begin impeachment proceedings for Biden's Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. 

"When we return next week, by necessity, the House Homeland Security Committee will move forward Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas," he said. "A vote on the floor will be held as soon as possible thereafter."

House Speaker Johnson charged that 
President Biden and Mayorkas "have willfully ignored and actively undermined our nation's immigration laws," stating in the letter that "rather than accept accountability, President Biden is now trying to blame Congress for what HE himself intentionally created."

"The American people know better, and that's why public opinion polls show the country has overwhelmingly sided with us on this issue," said Johnson.

H.R. 2 Secure the Border Act, enacted by House Republicans last year, was also brought up by the Speaker, who claimed that it contained "the core legislative reforms that are necessary to actually compel the Biden Administration to resolve the border catastrophe." On the other hand, the plan, which calls for resuming the "Remain in Mexico" policy and wall building along the U.S.-Mexico border, has been deemed dead on arrival as soon as it reaches the Senate.

Johnson acknowledged his prior demands that Biden take executive action, including resuming Trump-era tactics, to stop the flow of illegal immigrants at the border.

"If [Biden] wants our conference to view him as a good faith negotiator, he can start with the stroke of a pen," Johnson said.

The House Speaker also reiterated his support for Texas defending itself from the invasion at the Southern border.
