Kamala Harris is in a worse position in terms of her polling numbers stacked up against Donald Trump than both Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton were in the 2020 and 2016 election.

According to the Real Clear Polling (RCP) average on Aug. 31, 2024, Harris is leading Trump by 1.8 points in the polls nationally. Without toss-up states, the Electoral College is in Harris' favor by two electoral votes as of Saturday. Historically, in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, Trump overperformed. Clinton had been leading in the polls in 2016, but Trump still pulled away with the win. Although Biden beat Trump in 2020, several swing states came within thousands of votes.

Historic polling averages from RCP indicate that when Hillary was up against Trump in Aug. 2016, at this time, she was up by 4.6 points nationally, more than double the margin that Harris has now. With Biden in 2020, he was leading Trump by 6.3 points, or more than three times the amount that Harris is currently leading Trump with on the national average.

The historical polling data may bring bad news for Harris, as the media has gone relatively soft on her in comparison to Trump over the last several of her taking Biden's place as the Democratic nominee. In addition, the Democratic National Convention may have been the last point where she could have shined before going into the debates with Trump later in September.

Harris has had one sit-down interview thus far in the 2024 race as the Democratic candidate, which happened earlier this week on CNN with Dana Bash. Harris told the American people that even though she has flip flopped on positions such as the border, banning fracking, and other issues, that she still holds the same values as she did before she became the vice president in the Biden-Harris administration. Harris was ranked as the furthest left-wing Senator by GovTrack in 2019.
