Kelly has ordered that the "Black Mass" take place on the steps of the facility, and not inside.
The group hosting the event, Satanic Grotto, told the Daily Wire that they will keep pushing to hold the event in the state Capitol building, which has been described by them as an act of "sacrilegious blaspheme." Kelly has ordered that the "Black Mass" take place on the steps of the facility, and not inside.
Michael Stewart, who calls himself the "Devil of Kansas" told the outlet, “I will be performing that black mass in our State Capitol. If they have to arrest me, then they have to arrest me. I will be putting the call out to every satanist within three hours of Kansas City or Topeka and saying, ‘Who wants to march into the Capitol with me?’ We’ll see how many show up.”
After Kelly ordered the event be moved outside, Stewart said she had only "caved" to Republicans that were pushing her to make the order. The hosts have said that they are inviting all to come to the "Black Mass," a deliberate and explicit mockery of a Catholic Mass.
On Facebook, the event announcement stated, "The Satanic Grotto is proud to present Black Mass at the Capital. An expression of blaspheme and a dedication to Satan," and that the event will take place between 11 am and 1 pm on March 28.
“We have wafers,” Stewart told reporters. “I don’t want to comment on whether they’re consecrated or not because that would ruin the mystery.”
Chuck Weber, who is the Executive Director of the Kansas Catholic Conference, said that Kelly is not doing enough to stop the event dedicated to Satan. Weber slammed Kelly over not putting a stop to the event, and said that her moving the "Black Mass" outside the building was a "distinction without a difference." While Kelly said she was protecting free speech in her statement, Weber said that Kelly did not exercise her “duty to express her condemnation of this provocative hatred and anti-Catholic bigotry.”
In a statement regarding the "Black Mass," Kelly said, “There are more constructive ways to protest and express disagreements without insulting or denigrating sacred religious symbols. However, as governor, I also have a duty to protect protesters’ constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression, regardless of how offensive or distasteful I might find the content to be.”
A former Kansas congressman, Tim Huelskamp, told the Daily Wire, “Every politician, whether they’re Catholic or not, should do everything within their power to make certain this event doesn’t happen. There should be no black mass ever held on state property in Kansas, and I think it’s within the right and responsibility of the attorney general and the governor of Kansas to make sure this doesn’t happen.”
Stewart, who said he was disappointed in Kelly's statement, says he has been a staunch Democratic voter, but with Biden and how "everything’s turned out” on the satanic event, that he is "sick" of Democratic politicians.
“Hell, I’ll run for governor in 2026. The Devil of Kansas for Governor," Stewart added. He went on to claim that the "Black Mass" was not mocking Christians or Catholics, but that it is “therapeutic blasphemy” where Satan worshippers “express some of the anger, and the pain and the sorrow” they have rooted in being raised in religious households.
