Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) has slammed Kathy Hochul after the New York governor claimed that the effort to redistrict Texas backed by President Donald Trump was a "legal insurrection," calling the governor out for her own efforts to redistrict New York.

Hochul said after Texas approved a new electoral map that may favor more Republican seats in Congress going into the 2026 midterms that "Texas Republicans delivered Donald Trump the rigged map he demanded," and further added that New York would "confront Trump's legal insurrection head on."

Lawler responded, "Reminder: New York DID mid-decade redistricting last year at the behest of Hakeem Jeffries after trying to gerrymander New York’s maps in 2022! So did Kathy Hochul commit a 'legal insurrection' last year?"

"She literally has been on record going back to 2021 saying she would use redistricting to help Democrats win the House. Her comments are hypocritical at best and sociopathic at worst — she literally did what she is raging about Texas doing. The difference is, they can legally do it. New York had to corrupt the court of appeals to get an order to do it in 2024 and now wants to amend the constitution to have a THIRD attempt at gerrymandering," the New York Republican added.

The redistricting plan that passed on Wednesday with support from Texas GOP lawmakers, Governor Greg Abbott, and Trump has the potential to create five additional seats for Republicans in Congress come the 2026 midterm elections.

Oftentimes, the party in power is at a disadvantage in midterm elections, and the redistricting strategy in Texas could help the GOP hold onto its majority in the lower chamber on Capitol Hill. Democratic governors in several states, however, have vowed to counter the effort by Republicans.

Aside from Hochul in New York, California Governor Gavin Newsom has said that his state will redraw its congressional maps going into 2026. Other GOP-led states have also considered redistricting to potentially create more Republican seats in the House of Representatives, including Missouri and Ohio.
