New York Governor Kathy Hochul officially recognized January as Muslim American Heritage Month for the first time, issuing a proclamation on Friday and ordering state landmarks across New York to be lit green in celebration, including the World Trade Center's Freedom Tower. Freedom Tower was built in honor of those people who died in the 9/11 terror attacks.

Hochul’s proclamation designated the month and ordered 16 state landmarks illuminated “in honor of the Heritage and Culture of New York’s Muslim American Community.”

“Home to the largest Muslim American population in the nation, New York is proud to join in this month-long celebration, recognizing the values, faith and traditions of our Muslim American communities,” Hochul said in a statement. “New York remains committed to being a beacon of hope, tolerance, and inclusivity that celebrates the diversity of its Muslim American population and protects them from Islamophobia, hate, bias, and harm.”

Other locations illuminated included Empire State Plaza, Niagara Falls, the State Education Building, and additional sites across the state.

“The resilience, compassion, and contributions of Muslim communities help make our state stronger,” Hochul posted on X. “Tonight landmarks across the state are lit green as New York celebrates Muslim American Heritage Month.”

The New York Mayor’s Office also marked the occasion, stating on X, “Tonight is the first time New York State has officially recognized Muslim American Heritage Month, and we're grateful to [Kathy Hochul] for this proclamation honoring the Muslim New Yorkers who help make this place what it is—from small business owners to first responders, teachers to community leaders. In celebration, City Hall is glowing green alongside 16 state landmarks across New York.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was sworn in earlier this week on a Quran and is the city’s first Muslim mayor, issued a statement praising the recognition.

“While I was proud to be sworn in as our city’s first Muslim mayor yesterday, Muslims have been part of New York for centuries,” Mamdani said. “We have built small businesses, raised our families, pursued every profession, enriched our culture and cuisine, and been a part of what makes our city what it is today. I am grateful for Governor Hochul’s leadership in recognizing these many contributions and ensuring that every January, Muslim New Yorkers can see ourselves reflected and recognized in a city and state that is also our home.”
