Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un's health is on the line, according to a an anonymous US official who said Kim's life is in "grave danger."

South Korean officials said that they were looking into the reports further. South Korean officials also said they were unable to verify news from Daily NK, a propaganda outlet in the country, that said Kim was recovering from heart surgery and that his condition was improving.

Kim's health has been in question since he missed the annual celebration of his grandfather Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea, on April 15.

"There have been a number of recent rumors about Kim's health (smoking, heart, and brain). If Kim is hospitalized, it would explain why he wasn't present on the important April 15th celebrations," said Bruce Klingner to CNN, a former CIA deputy division chief for the authoritarian regime. "But, over the years, there have been a number of false health rumors about Kim Jong-un or his father. We'll have to wait and see."

Un had previously vanished from public life in 2014, after which he returned using a walking cane. South Korean officials confirmed that the leader had a cyst removed from his ankle.
