"I want Scott on our new editorial board!!! Growing the board with experts who have thoughtful balanced views and new candidates are accepting the challenge to join us!" the LA Times owner said.
The Los Angeles Times has brought on CNN's conservative commentator Scott Jennings to its editorial board, Jennings confirmed in a statement on Friday. Jennings posted a statement to confirm he would be on the editorial board of the paper after its owner Pat Shoon-Shiong expressed interest in bringing him on earlier this week.
"It’s true - I’ve accepted [Pat Soon Shiong's] invitation to join the editorial board of the LA Times. I’ve written columns for the paper over the last few years and was honored to do so under such a storied and important masthead. I love newspapers and believe in strong journalism and strong opinion pages that represent a wide array of views."
The Los Angeles Times owner was looking to put a conservative voice on the paper's editorial board after President-elect Donald Trump's win earlier this month. This comes after the normally left-leaning publication chose not to endorse Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. One figure who may be joining the board is CNN's conservative commentator, Scott Jennings.
LA Times owner Pat Soon-Shiong posted to X on Tuesday, "I want Scott on our new editorial board!!! Growing the board with experts who have thoughtful balanced views and new candidates are accepting the challenge to join us! Way to go Scott and thanks for accepting... Stay tuned we are making this happen."
Soon-Shiong previously told reporters that he wanted the addition of Jennings, because the owner wants "some truly critical thinkers, thoughtful people, [on] the board" who are able to "voice opinion based on the facts," per Mediaite. He commented at the time that he has liked Jennings in his approach to debate and thought that he puts into his answers and explanations.
Soon-Shiong told Fox News earlier this month with Trace Gallagher who asked him about the future of the paper after the 2024 election. The media landscape has been shifting since Trump's win, with multiple outlets slashing costs and changing things up.
Gallagher said, "Do you plan to just fix the editorial section or are you planning to go over and redo the entire paper?"
Soon-Shiong replied, “I think the latter. I think exactly — I think one of my concerns is you as a journalist would understand that’s news versus opinion. And we’ve conflated news and opinion. So, the first thing I want to do is ensure that we explicitly say this is news. And if it’s news, it should just be the facts period. And if it’s an opinion, that’s maybe an opinion of the news and that’s what I call now a voice."
