Latino groups push back against woke term 'Latinx'

Some Democrats are even aware of this, with Rep. Ruben Gallego, head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' campaign arm, announcing that his congressional staff are not allowed to use the word in official communications.

Latinos have spoken out in full-force against the use of the gender-neutral term "Latinx," with the head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' campaign arm, the president of a Latino civil rights organization, and many others denouncing the "woke" word.

"Latinx" was invented within far-left academic and social media circles, in an effort to remove gender from a gendered language. In Spanish, the "o" in Latino refers to a male or mixed group of people of Latin-American descent, while the "a" at the end of "Latina" would refer to a female. "Latinx" is not a Spanish word.

Cuban-American media strategist Giancarlo Sopo recently released a political ad highlighting the disconnect between Democrats like President Joe Biden who use the word "Latinx" to refer to Latinos, who don't even use the term themselves.

"'Latinx' has backfired on the Democrats so badly that it's only a matter of time before they start publishing thought pieces on how accusing them of trying to make it a thing is 'DiSiNfOrMaTiOn!!!'," Sopo wrote on Twitter.

Even some Democrats are aware of this, with Rep. Ruben Gallego, head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' campaign arm, announcing that his congressional staff are not allowed to use the word in official communications.

Domingo García, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, which is the oldest Latino civil rights organization in the US according to Axios, has also spoken out.

Days after Gallego's announcement, García also instructed his staff and board members to stop the use of "Latinx" in official communications, NBC reported.

"The reality is, there is very little to no support for its use, and it's sort of seen as something used inside the Beltway or in Ivy League tower settings," García told NBC News.

According to a nationwide poll from Bendixen & Amandi International, only 2 percent of Hispanic-American voters refer to themselves as "Latinx."
