Legendary singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett, who was known for his upbeat tropical-themed music, passed away on Friday night at the age of 76. The cause of death was not immediately released.

A statement on his website said, "Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends music, and dogs." It added, "He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many."

According to the Daily Mail, Buffett had to reschedule concerts in May after announcing on social media that he had been hospitalized without details as to why.

Buffett was most known for his hit song "Margaritaville" which was released in February 1977 and spent 22 weeks on the Billboard chart, peaking at number 8. The song is described as "A laid-back anthem about escapism and life in the tropics," and later became the theme of his restaurant chain of the same name.

"There was no such place as Margaritaville," he told the Arizona Republic in 2021. "It was a made-up place in my mind, basically made up about my experiences in Key West and having to leave Key West and go on the road to work and then come back and spend time by the beach."

He built a loyal fanbase of 'Parrotheads' who supported him to a $1 billion net worth at his death. Buffett is survived by his wife Jane Slagsvol, and three children, Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron.
