A round of golf with Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and President Donald Trump triggered a surge of criticism from left-wing Canadian social media users over the weekend, with many accusing Gretzky of showing disloyalty to Canada and aligning himself with a supposed fascist.

Trump posted photos and video from the outing, which also featured LIV golfer Brooks Koepka and Fox News host Bret Baier. The images show Gretzky on the course with the president in Florida, where Trump was seen wearing his red “Make America Great Again” hat. The posts drew a rapid online reaction, largely from critics who argued Gretzky should distance himself from Trump.

Dozens of users described Gretzky as a “traitor,” with one writing, “Absolutely DISGUSTING!!!! TRAITOR.” Another post read, “Gretzky can stop with his excuses. He’s made his choice and Canadians see him.” Several accounts escalated the rhetoric, suggesting Gretzky had “abandoned” his country or was “no longer The Great One.” One user wrote, “The Great One is no longer Great; disappointing. The Greedy One.”

“I grew up worshipping Wayne Gretzky… I have lost all respect,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Putting a puck in a net doesn’t make you a good human… stop idolizing athletes.”

Some users also linked their anger to earlier incidents this year, including Gretzky entering through the American tunnel during a 4 Nations championship ceremony and not wearing a Canadian jersey for the ceremonial face-off. Gretzky has said publicly he has no intention of influencing politics and remains devoted to Canada.

Not all responses were negative. Supporters pushed back against the outrage, arguing Gretzky had the right to associate with the president. “So he’s not allowed to golf with the leader of the free world? Says who?” one post said. Another commented, “The greatest hockey player to ever live can do as he pleases. Canada loves him.”

Gretzky has appeared with Trump on multiple occasions in recent years, including the president’s inauguration and victory events. The hockey GOAT is also a longtime golfer, and his family has ties to the sport through his son-in-law, professional golfer Dustin Johnson.
