Officials say it may take several treatments over multiple days to remove all of it.
Washington DC’s Lincoln Memorial was vandalized Wednesday morning, with red paint thrown on the ground and "Free Gaza" spray painted in multiple places.
According to Fox 5, United States Park Police found the paint and graffiti on the steps and plaza area between the Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial Circle.
Shortly after the graffiti was discovered, National Park Service conservators began removing it, and officials say it may take several treatments over multiple days to remove all of it.
While the cleanup takes place, the steps are closed to the public. Those with knowledge of the incident are urged to contact the United States Park Police.
In November, historic US monuments and statues were vandalized in Washington, D.C. as well as other places as the "National March for Palestine" was ongoing.
Pro-Palestinian agitators climbed atop the Lafayette monument, which lies in a park next to the White House, placed a Palestinian flag into the hands of American Revolutionary War hero Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. Other historical figures beneath were draped in keffiyeh scarves and anti-American signage was placed all over the monument. They also graffitied the monument with the slogan, "Free Palestine."
Other statues, including ones depicting Benjamin Franklin, Andrew Jackson, and Comte de Rochambeau, were draped in Palestinian flags, keffiyeh scarves, and plastered with banners that included anti-American and anti-Israel slogans.
