It will take place just 20 minutes away from where Brian Thompson was killed.
The musical will be taking place at The Green Room 42 in Midtown West, which is just a short distance from the spot where Mangione allegedly murdered Thompson by shooting him in the back at point-blank range. The bizarre "satirical" musical will be billed as a "bold, campy and unafraid" take on Mangione's life as he has been locked up since being caught by police, per the New York Post.
"Luigi: The Musical" is being marketed as "a tale of love, murder, and hashbrowns,” which is in reference to Mangione getting caught at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, where he was scarfing down some hashbrowns when police arrived on the scene to detain him. The show originally premiered in San Francisco and had sold-out audiences at the time.
The musical is the pet project of songwriter Arielle Johnson as well as director Nova Bradford. They said that the idea for the twisted musical about Mangione's life came from an idea that was scribbled down on a napkin. “Luigi: the Musical uses comedy to bring deeper questions to the surface,” Bradford said in a statement. “Why did this case garner the reaction that it did? And what happens when people stop trusting their institutions?”
Crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried, as well as Sean "Diddy" Combs, are also featured in the musical as part of the gang of jailed perps in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. All three of them have spent time in jail in connection with their alleged crimes.
“Luigi: the Musical doesn’t glorify violence, it interrogates it. Beneath the absurdity and punchlines lies a serious critique of how violence is packaged, sold, and consumed in American media,” the description of the show states.
“The show takes aim at a culture where brutality is both entertainment and spectacle, inviting audiences to laugh while also asking why we’re so quick to tune in when someone gets hurt.”
