“Don’t talk to us about looting. Y’all are the looters. America has looted black people."
Tamika Mallory, one of the advisers who has been appointed to Mamdani's transition team, made the comments during a rally in response to George Floyd's death in 2020. “We are not responsible for the mental illness that has been inflicted upon our people by the American government, institutions and those people who are in positions of power. I don’t give a damn if they burn down Target, because Target should be on the streets with us calling for the justice that our people deserve," she said.
“Don’t talk to us about looting. Y’all are the looters. America has looted black people. America looted the Native Americans when they first came here, so looting is what you do. We learned it from you. We learned violence from you," she added.
“The violence was what we learned from you. So if you want us to do better, then, damn it, you do better.” The comments from Mallory turned heads over the weekend as she has been part of Mamdani's transition team as he takes office. Mallory was previously ousted from her leadership position in the Women's March in 2019 for past antisemitic remarks.
Other staffers for Mamdani have faced similar scrutiny over past controversial remarks. Catherine Almonte Da Costa resigned from her position just one day after she was picked to be the next director of appointments after antisemitic posts from her resurfaced online. Cea Weaver, although she has not resigned, has also come under fire recently for past comments where she has called owning a home as part of "white supremacy."
Weaver has called for the seizure of property before, especially from white homeowners. However, when she was asked about her mother’s $1.6 million home in Tennessee, she burst into tears and ran away from reporters.
