Hutcherson reportedly used a 1.5-inch ceramic blade in the attack, leaving the fellow inmate with slashes across the left side of his face and head.
The career criminal accused of stabbing two teen girls visiting New York City from South America has reportedly slashed a fellow inmate at Rikers Island.
Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that 36-year-old Steven Hutcherson allegedly got up from his cot at 8 am on Thursday morning at the Eric M Taylor Center and attacked a 43-year-old man who was lying just feet away from him.
Hutcherson reportedly used a 1.5-inch ceramic blade in the attack, leaving the fellow inmate with slashes across the left side of his face and head.
The sources said that a correction officer intervened and pepper sprayed Hutcherson before rushing the victim to the jail’s infirmary, who was later transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment.
Officials with the Department of Corrections said that Hutcherson had been scanned for weapons sometime prior to the attack and none had been found at that point. The department is investigating how he got the weapon.
A Department of Corrections spokesperson said that Hutcherson was cleared by health officials to be placed in Rikers’ general population.
According to the New York Post, he has since been transferred to a separate Rikers jail "where he will be confined for 14 hours a day and be kept away from some inmates."
Hutcherson was arraigned on Tuesday evening and ordered to be held without bail. He has been charged with attempted murder and assault charges after attacking 14 and 16-year-old sisters who were eating at a French restaurant inside Grand Central’s dining area on Christmas Day.
Hutcherson allegedly yelled before the attack when he got into a verbal argument with staff at the restaurant who didn’t let him in, "I want all the white people dead! I want to sit next to the crackers!"
Hutcherson has been arrested at least 17 times before, and has had at least six emotional disturbance encounters with police. He has also allegedly violated a restraining order filed by an ex-girlfriend numerous times, who said that Hutcherson stalked and threatened to kill her.
