On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched a global effort to eradicate left-wing political terrorism, calling it a "distinctive and unique evil" rooted in hatred for civilization itself. He warned that such violence is on the rise, should not be downplayed, and is one of the greatest threats facing America. Rubio announced that there would be new visa restrictions to "bar Far-Left Terrorists from entering our country."

Speaking at the US Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism at the Department of State in Washington, D.C., Rubio outlined a worldwide strategy to dismantle transnational networks of far-left extremists, including Antifa militants who operate across borders. He was joined by leaders from across the globe.

"This is a distinctive and unique evil. It has always been driven by a hatred, above all else, for civilization itself," Rubio stated. "It is a revolt of the worst against the best; of the weak and the cowardly against the strong and the good. It is perpetrated by those who cannot build, cannot create, cannot achieve great things — and take their revenge upon the world for their own inadequacy by seeking to destroy those who can."

"This is what radical leftism is," Rubio continued. "It may wear various different slogans and ideologies across place and time — anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, communist, anarchist, Marxist — but the fundamental character is always the same. It is a poisonous resentment cloaked in the language of equality, justice, liberation; an overwhelming need to tear down what greater men have built, to wreck what is beautiful and right, on behalf of people who are only filled with ugliness, and have nothing else to offer to the world. Through violence and terror, they once again seek to impose their ugliness on all of us."

Rubio detailed a pattern of escalating attacks and plots, stating that left-wing terrorism has been on the rise and should not be downplayed. He indirectly condemned Democratic politicians for misleading the public into believing that the threat is nonexistent.

The Secretary of State cited a series of incidents, including "an all-out assault on immigration officers, sniper attacks, explosives, armed ambushes, and a transgender shooter opening fire on Catholic elementary school students as they prayed." He also highlighted the international component of the threat.

"Antifa militants and their comrades travel from across Europe and to the Americas to participate in each other's attacks — to funnel propaganda and training materials and target information through shared encrypted channels, moving through underground networks of safehouses and finance," said Rubio.

Under President Trump's leadership, Rubio said, the United States is taking decisive action for the first time. He explained that the US is "building the infrastructure, the partnerships, and the strategy to defeat the scourge of far-left terror." Additional terrorism designations for left-wing groups are pending, Rubio announced.

Trump's Secretary of State vowed to take the fight global. "We will dismantle these networks brick by brick. It is time for the people of the civilized world to defend ourselves — to stand united against this encroaching darkness and fight for what is ours," Rubio said.

The summit brought together leaders and representatives from dozens of countries to strengthen cooperation on mapping violent networks, disrupting terrorist financing, and taking collective action against a threat that crosses borders. Rubio framed left-wing violence as one of the most pressing challenges facing America and its allies, calling for a unified international resolve to counter it.

Several other Cabinet members were in attendance, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. In September 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order designating Antifa a terrorist organization. Shortly after, the president issued a national security presidential memorandum, NSPM-7, to combat the threat of organized political violence, ordering his Cabinet to take immediate action in dismantling political terrorism.
