"I told ABC that their story was largely inaccurate. People will have to judge for themselves the decision to run it anyway."
Former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has denied claims that he had "flipped" on Trump and agreed to testify in exchange for immunity before special counsel Jack Smith’s team.
Meadows’ attorney George Terwilliger told CBS News, "I told ABC that their story was largely inaccurate. People will have to judge for themselves the decision to run it anyway."
The claims came from a Tuesday ABC News report in which anonymous sources said Meadows had informed Smith’s team he "repeatedly told Trump in the weeks after the 2020 presidential election that the allegations of significant voting fraud coming to them were baseless," the report states.
Meadows also allegedly told federal investigators Trump was being "dishonest" with the public when he said he won the election hours after polls closed.
"Obviously we didn't win," a source quoted Meadows as telling Smith's team.
ABC News states that in Meadows’ book, The Chief’s Chief, he wrote that the election was "stolen" and "rigged" with help from "allies in the liberal media" that ignored "actual evidence of fraud, right there in plain sight for anyone to access and analyze," but reportedly told investigators privately that he has not seen evidence of fraud related to the 2020 election.
The outlet reported that the immunity order states the information Meadows provided to a grand jury earlier in the year could not be used against him in a federal prosecution.
In a June report from The Independent, the outlet stated that the immunity deal would include Meadows pleading guilty to a number of unspecified federal crimes, but Terwilliger told the outlet at the time that the idea was "complete bullsh*t."
In a pair of Truth Social posts on Tuesday following the ABC News report, Trump said "Mark Meadows NEVER told me that allegations of significant fraud (about the RIGGED Election!) were baseless. He certainly didn’t say that in his book!"
"I don’t think Mark Meadows would lie about the Rigged and Stollen [sic] 2020 Presidential Election merely for getting IMMUNITY against Prosecution (PERSECUTION!) by Deranged Prosecutor, Jack Smith. BUT, when you really think about it, after being hounded like a dog for three years, told you’ll be going to jail for the rest of your life, your money and your family will be forever gone … Some people would make that deal, but they are weaklings and cowards, and so bad for the future our Failing Nation. I don’t think that Mark Meadows is one of them, but who really knows?"
Meadows, along with Trump and 17 other co-defendants, have been charged in Fulton County, Georgia with violations of the Georgia RICO Act, along with other charges.
