A 25-year-old illegal immigrant has been hit with a slew of charges after allegedly breaking into a Michigan home and sexually assaulting two girls last month.

Miguel Hernandez-Ruiz, a Mexican national, was charged with first-degree home invasion and two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under the age of 13.

According to WoodTV, the incident took place on March 20 at the Sweet Lake Manufactured Housing and Camping Resort Community just outside Sturgis, a town 45 miles south of Kalamazoo.

That day, deputies with the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office made their way to the resort following reports that a man had forced his way into one of the homes in the complex.

Upon arrival, they learned that in addition to the home invasion, two young girls had been sexually assaulted.

Hernandez-Ruiz fled the scene before he could be questioned, but surveillance camera footage captured him in his vehicle as he left. Law enforcement eventually tracked him down in Fort Wayne, Indiana, some 60 miles to the south.

He was arrested and taken into custody, where he is still being held without bond on an immigration detainer, expected to appear in court on April 30.

As WoodTV reports, Hernandez-Ruiz legally entered the United States with a temporary work permit, but remained in the country long after it expired in December 2021.

During Hernandez-Ruiz's arraignment, St. Joseph County prosecutor David Marvin warned that the Mexican man was a flight risk and posed a danger to society.

"This is so serious that we've got to make sure we protect St. Joseph County, and honestly any county in the United States," he said, per WWMT, "because we can't afford to have this person leave."
