"This renaming honors President Trump’s steadfast commitment to putting America first and prioritizing the needs of the American people," the city's mayor said.
Trump was able to personally sign one of the street signs when he was attending a memorial service in Florida, per the New York Post. Palm Avenue, which runs through the city of Hialeah, and is heavily populated with Cuban-Americans, will now be known as Donald J. Trump Avenue.
On X, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino posted, “Miami-Dade County strongly supported President Trump during the election, and this designation serves as a lasting tribute to his leadership and vision for our nation."
The city of Hialeah in Miami-Dade has one of the largest per capita Hispanic populations in the entire country and has usually swung for Democrats. However, when Trump was up against Vice President Kamala Harris this time around, the Republican trounced her by huge margins.
According to the Miami Herald, the county commission voted 9-1 on Tuesday to approve the city's request to change the name of Palm Avenue. Democrats on the commission could have blocked the move, as they have the majority of the seats, however, they opted to allow the renaming to go forward.
The only "no" vote came from Marleine Bastien, a Haitian American from a community in the county. The commissioner said she "respect[s] the fact that President Trump won the popular vote, the Electoral College and Miami-Dade County" but argued that his victory would not "erase the collective trauma that immigrants and citizens alike felt during this election cycle."
Mayor of Hialeah Estaban Bovo wrote on X with the commission's approval, "This renaming honors President Trump’s steadfast commitment to putting America first and prioritizing the needs of the American people. It is a tribute to his vision and efforts to uphold the values that resonate deeply with our community."
