"In sizing up the field in the race for mayor, there is one candidate whose management experience and government know-how stand above the others: Andrew Cuomo."
Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has endorsed Andrew Cuomo in the city’s upcoming mayoral election, backing the former governor in both the Democratic primary and the general election. Bloomberg, a billionaire and longtime figure in New York City politics, is also expected to contribute financially to Cuomo’s campaign.
“I care deeply about the future of our city, and since leaving office, it has been difficult to watch its struggles, especially since the pandemic,” Bloomberg said on Tuesday. “In sizing up the field in the race for mayor, there is one candidate whose management experience and government know-how stand above the others: Andrew Cuomo.”
In his statement, Bloomberg acknowledged past differences he had with Cuomo during their time as mayor and governor, but emphasized his confidence in Cuomo’s leadership abilities.
“But I also know his strengths as a leader and manager. Of all the candidates, Andrew has the skills our city needs to lead us forward,” Bloomberg added.
While Bloomberg did not name other candidates in the race, the New York Post reported that sources believe he was alarmed by the candidacy of Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who has taken anti-capitalist and anti-Israel positions.
This marks a rare move for Bloomberg, who has mostly stayed out of city electoral politics since leaving office. In 2021, he declined to endorse in the Democratic primary but later backed Eric Adams in the general election. With incumbent Mayor Eric Adams running for re-election as an independent amid a series of scandals, political strategists believe Bloomberg’s backing of Cuomo could bolster his appeal among moderate Democrats and Jewish voters.
“It will give Cuomo a boost with voters who care about the management of the city and issues related to the quality of life. Voters who thought Bloomberg was a good manager,” said Basil Smikle, former executive director of the state Democratic Party, per the New York Post.
Bloomberg concluded his endorsement by stating, “The question before New Yorkers is not: Who is the perfect choice? No mayor is perfect. The question is: Who is the best choice? To me, that choice is clear: Andrew Cuomo.”
Cuomo said in response to the endorsement, "Today, in this critical moment as New York City faces another crisis, I appreciate Mayor Bloomberg's support and faith in my vision for a stronger, safer, more affordable New York City for all."
