Rep. Mike Garcia (R-CA) defeated defeated Democrat Christy Smith in a northern Los Angeles swing district, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday.
Republicans reportedly won three other House seats within the heavily Democrat-controlled state of California in 2020. These 2020 Republican victories are quite the rebound from the loss of seven House seats by the Republicans in 2018
Garcia thanked his campaign team on Twitter, Tuesday, saying, "Our dedicated volunteers have been in full afterburner for over 18 months, and they kept at it for 25 days after Election Day to make sure every vote was counted. I could not have done it without them."
The race results were certified by Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Tuesday, and only displayed a 333 vote margin in Garcia's favor, the AP reported. Garcia's race was reportedly the closest House race in the state of California this year.
Smith conceded Monday night, saying, "it’s clear we will not be able to close [the gap]."
Garcia is a former Navy fighter pilot and defense industry executive. He claimed victory in his race more than a week ago, saying he would like to focus of pushing for Federal relief for small businesses and American citizens suffering from the COVID-19 shutdowns.
This win leaves seven House races still undecided, but leaning GOP.
