A 14-year-old Rankin County West student who goes by "she/they" pronouns has been charged with murder in the shooting of her mother as well as the attempted murder of her stepfather.
Carly Madison Gregg, a student from Rankin County West High School in Mississippi, is being charged with murder in connection to the death of her mother 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, after the woman was found dead in her home on Tuesday by Gregg's stepfather.
Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said they got a phone call on Tuesday at around 5 pm local time regarding a shooting at the 200th block of Ashton Way
Smylie's husband told police that when he came home on Tuesday, he found his wife dead and Gregg holding a pistol, according to KSLA News.
Gregg's stepfather told authorities he managed to take the pistol away from the 14-year-old but was shot in the arm in the process. Gregg proceeded to run away from the house but was captured by the authorities.
Gregg's bond is set at $1,000,000 and she pleaded not guilty.
Police say that the 14-year-old will be charged as an adult in the case.
The city of Flowood said in a statement, "Our deepest prayers and condolences are with our Northwest Rankin family during this difficult time. We love our Cougar family. You are not alone."
